Post Separation Abuse Model
Post Separation Abuse is what takes place AFTER a victim leaves the abusive relationship she/he has been in. No one warns victims that this will happen, and they are blindsided by it. It doesn’t have to rock your foundation once again. You can make it through with help and a great team by your side.
Under the Post Separation Abuse Umbrella lies the heart of all abuse. This is called Coercive Control and, I believe, all types of abuse stem from this.
Medical News Today States this about Coercive Control:
“Coercive control refers to a pattern of controlling behaviors that create an unequal power dynamic in a relationship. These behaviors give the perpetrator power over their partner, making it difficult for them to leave. It is a pattern of behaviors that enables someone to exert power over another person through fear and control.”
“Sometimes, coercive control can escalate into physical abuse. However, even when it does not escalate, coercive control is a form of emotional abuse that can cause psychological trauma.”
“Coercive control can happen in any type of intimate relationship and includes behaviors such as insulting the other person, making threats, exerting financial control, and using sexual coercion.”
All the abuse shown above in the Post Separation Abuse Model are forms of Coercive Control.
